VITAS VOLUNTEER DEPT. is looking for a special breed of volunteers who are able to spend time with Hospice patients living at home or at long term care facilities. Volunteers give their time to terminally ill patients and their caregivers, and training is provided in many skills including listening and the right words to say to patients and their loved ones. 1.Accounting (Non Profit bookkeeping)
Hillsdale High School Foundation---HHSF is looking for 2 interns to work after school on campus for a total of 4 hours per week (flexible hours). You’ll learn how to use excel spreadsheets, reconcile bank deposits, send out IRS tax letters, and use ledgers. See Ms. Jackson in the Career Center or email resume here
2. Architecture.
Blue Coast Designs. The Administrative Intern is an unpaid position with Blue Coast Designs, Inc. designed to provide office and administrative experience within a residential building design firm.
This position will require administrative duties such as filing, printing, running errands, and data entry. As an Intern, you will be able to accompany the Lead Designer and/or Project Manager on occasional field visits and client meetings. You will be introduced to the art of drafting and CAD (computer-aided design). Additional duties and opportunities may arise over the course of your internship as well.

3. Bio technology/Science.
A. NASA--Kennedy Center INTERNSHIP (FL)
NASA offers internships at the Kennedy Space Center to high school, undergraduate and graduate students alike, with the ultimately goal of getting young people interested in pursuing careers in the space sciences.
How to Apply: Submit an application online via NASA's Kennedy Space Center website. NASA places particular emphasis on letters of recommendation, so be sure to have enlist the best person(s) possible. It is also important to note that because NASA is a government agency, the application process will include a background check. B. University of California, San Francisco. Research Assistant. Intern will mount histological sections on slides and view through a light microscope; selected fields will be imaged with a digital camera. Requires good basic computer skills, ability to use a microscope and computer imaging systems. 17 & up.
C. Additional Biotech related internships are available through Bridges to Employment (BTE), and application information will be made available by April for Summer 2012 positions.
D. Stanford (SIMR) internship applications are due in April of 2011. See website or come to the Career Center for more information.
4. Civil Service
San Mateo Police & Fire Departments offer internships and job shadowing through the Hillsdale High School Career Center. You can earn 5 class credits as a Police Cadet, or do job shadowing through the ride along program at SMPD or 3 Site visits to various Fire houses for training. See Ms. Jackson for background check information and applications.
5. Docent/Junior Ambassador (Apply in OCTOBER for Spring 2012)
Work as a docent at Filoli Gardens through the Junior Ambassador Program through Hillsdale High School. Learn to give tours of Filoli Mansion, learn about its history, culture, antiques and gardens as your earn academic credit at Hillsdale. See Ms. Jackson for interview and application details. 6. Education
Beresford Elementary School needs students to read with and/or work on other subjects with elementary students after school. Great opportunity for those interested in learning about careers in education and teaching or working with children. Contact: Alicia Heneghan by email
Mid-Pen Boys & Girls Club tutor young kids once a week. You will assigned a student and you will work with them through out the semester. This internship requires patience and a general interest in children. Contact Stacey Stenzel at 650-347-9891 or send her an email.

CBS, Radio Alice Intern for SARAH & VINNIE, the highest rated morning radio show in the Bay Area needs interns. Must be 18 years old, and also attending college (concurrent enrollment OK). Early morning hours. Hillsdale Exclusive!
KDPO 89.3 FM, Get hands on radio station and studio experience. KPDO is interviewing for summer 2011 interns now. Must be 16 & up.
8. Event Management
Home Away from Homelessness. Help with invitations, mailings, silent auctions, check in registration, and donor solicitation for annual Gala Fundraiser at SF based Charity after school program for Children of the Bay area Homeless. Most of the work can be done on Hillsdale Campus and will require all interns to work the night of the Gala event in SF usually in March or April. See MS. Jackson for details.
Safari Run. A children’s Birthday Party Planner will hire interns to serve as Party Hosts. Must like working with Kids, be organized and willing to play and lead games with Children for a successful party. Will learn small business operations, planning and customer service. 9. Fashion & Merchandising
Nordstrom Fashion Board—Each year, Nordstroms recruits several teens from Hillsdale to serve on their Brass Plum Fashion Board. Students need to demonstrate an interest in Fashion and merchandising and must be available for one evening session per month for the year. You will be asked to do a project demonstrating your interest to be considered. See Ms. Jackson for details and applications.
Yorktown Road—Edgy local designer is interviewing for interns to help prep and support handmade creations in San Mateo after school. Learn about textiles, fabrics, and small business operations with flexible hours for class credit. Email Ms. Jackson to apply for this unique opportunity.

SPCA in San Mateo is providing Hillsdale High School students a special training session to qualify as an official volunteer for the SPCA. Learn to care for wild and domestic animals. The Mosaic Project needs TEens to work towards a peaceful future by uniting kids of diverse backgrounds. Work as a camp leader for a week in Napa and earn 100 hours of community service and internship credit as an elective.

*Parents who are concerned with taking their students out of school for a week should know that Mosaic organizes workload with their teachers before hand and also have study hall periods so they can get all their homework done. Mosaic can be a great grade confidence booster, and students really enjoy this unique experience.
