Lots of upcoming events from GATE Parents Group. Please note that some are FREE, others like the college essay course has a fee. Some are first come-first serve and open to the general public. Others have a priority enrollment for GATE students before open enrollment to all district students. Please register if needed and follow ALL instructions as provided. If online registration and separate payment or mail in forms are required, you must do all parts to be confirmed.

RETURNING COLLEGE PANEL
Jan 4, 2012, Wednesday 2PM - College Freshmen Panel - San Mateo Main Library Oak Room. Hear from SMUHSD district grads on what their first months at college was like and what prepared them for this year. Various 2011 HS grads representing colleges and universities from CA, out of state, private, public, with diverse majors. This is motivational for students of any grade level but most beneficial for juniors and seniors.
Free and open to all students.

COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID
Jan 11, 2012, Wednesday 7PM - FAFSA Workshop with Dr. Wruble - Burlingame HS Auditorium. A leading expert in the college financial aid process will help you fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Forms are provided. This is for parents of seniors but parents of any grade level are welcome for some early enlightenment.
Free and open to all parents.

College Essay Workshop Series - Class of 2013
Fee associated. GATE students have priority before Jan 18.
Developing Your Voice in Writing. The college statement is not a traditional essay, and students often err in writing to that end. It is, instead, a personal statement.

When: Orientation Meeting Wednesday, January 25, 2012. Burlingame High School Alumni Room. Small Group meetings will be determined by school site and participation.

Cost: $200

To Register: Send completed San Mateo Union High School District Parent Consent Form (below) and check payable to SMUHSD GATE Parents to: College Essay, 650 N. Delaware Street, San Mateo, CA 94401.

E-mail confirmations will be sent by January 21, 2012.

Registration: Open Enrollment Closes January 18, 2012. Each school is allotted an equitable number of spaces filled upon a distribution formula. SMUHSD GATE no longer uses a first come first served method of selection. If a school’s allocation fills up, a waiting list will be formed. After January 18, 2012 those on the waiting list will fill any spaces that are not taken.

Cancellations: Final enrollment will be confirmed by January 21, 2012. There are no cancellations after this date.

Macworld Expo 2012
Free. GATE students district field trip.
 
When: Friday, January 27, 2012. Departing at 8:45 AM from the Millbrae Bart Station. Students will be returned to the Millbrae Bart Station at 2:45 p.m. Please arrange for on-time student pick-up.

Cost: Free!

School Rules: This is a school-sponsored activity. All school rules apply. Dress Code: Comfortable attire.

Fee structure for GATE and non-GATE students. No priority enrollment. Course at both Capuchino HS and San Mateo HS if there is enough demand.

Morning Sessions from 9AM - 12PM
Afternoon Sessions from 1PM - 4PM

Mail-in GATE student fee: $250

Franklin Templeton Investments - Afterschool Company Program
A Junior Achievement Sponsored Event

Student teams will form, run, and liquidate a company with guidance from Franklin Templeton employees

When: Tuesday’s -4:30 pm-6:30 pm -January 17- April 3, 2012

The Afterschool Company Program

Students will work with volunteers at Franklin Templeton Investments in San Mateo in forming, running, and liquidating a corporation. In this 12-week program, students will learn what it takes to raise capital, build a business plan, market a product, and build effective teamwork and leadership skills. This unique experience goes beyond the classroom and has inspired many business leaders in Silicon Valley.

• Tuesday’s from January 17- April 3, 2012
• 4:30 pm-6: 30 pm Franklin Templeton Investments- San Mateo
(Final dates to be determined due to Spring Break)
• Students are asked to make this a permanent commitment in their schedule and attend all team meetings.
• Students will be asked to dress in business attire for the weekly meetings with their teams
A separate Junior Achievement Permission form will be required to participate in this program.
